Johnny Rollo Dickerson

Johnny Rollo Dickerson departed this world for his heavenly home on July 4th 2020. He was born to the late Caroline Holder-Phipps on February 20th 1931 in Murphysboro Township. Johnny attended Murphysboro schools and graduated from Murphysboro Township High School in 1948. During and after high school Johnny worked at Pullis Feed and Hatchery in Murphysboro until his enlistment into the United States Marine Corp in 1949. He served in the USMC from 1949-1952 during the Korean War Conflict. Upon returning home to Murphysboro Johnny built his mother a home and he began working for the Standard Oil Company. On December 31st 1955 Johnny was united in marriage to Norma “Jean” Tweedy. Together they spent 57 wonderful years. Jean preceded him in death in 2013. Johnny worked for the Standard Oil Company throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s, when Standard Oil became Amoco. In 1976 he became an Amoco Jobber and officially owned and operated Dickerson Oil Company. He delivered fuel to countless homes, farms, and businesses over the years. He retired with his wife in 1995 to be able to enjoy their lives together and with their family. Johnny enjoyed being outdoors. He loved to fish, hunt, garden, and raised animals. Johnny loved his family and enjoyed spending time with all of them. Johnny was a devoted Christian and a Deacon at Fairview Christian Church. He loved to spread the gospel of the Lord. He and his wife would take anyone who needed a ride to church on Sunday to help instill his love of the Lord into them. Survivors include his beloved dogs Mackie and Millie, one son and daughter in-law Mike and Rhonda Dickerson of Murphysboro; one daughter Leslie Fairless of Murphysboro. Four granddaughters Amanda Gordon and husband Rob of Tampa Florida, Ashley Dickerson and fiancé Glenn Stokes of Murphysboro, Kendra Fairless of Murphysboro, and Kaylie Eberhart and husband A.J. of Mt. Vernon, two great-grandchildren Keegan Norris and Lakyn Stokes of Murphysboro. One brother in law and his special friend John Tweedy and Carol Wexstten of Murphysboro, four sister in-laws Peggy Phipps of Pearland TX, Patsy Roberts, Nita Blake, and Judy Moore all of Murphysboro. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Jean, he was preceded in death by his brother Glenn Phipps, three brother in-laws, one sister in law, one niece and one nephew. Graveside services will be held at 11am on Wednesday July 8th at Fairview Christian Church Cemetery with Pastor Andy Cunningham officiating, military rights will be conducted by American Legion Post 127 of Murphysboro. Memorials can be made to the Fairview Christian Church Cemetery Fund and/or the Murphysboro Food Pantry.
