Terry Givens

Terry Givens, 67, of Murphysboro, IL., lost his courageous battle with cancer at 4:30PM on Friday January 22, 2016. Terry was born on May 13, 1948 in Raymond Washington. He was the son of the late Jim and Charlene (Glasco) Givens. He married his high school sweetheart Sue Layne on April 2, 1966 and raised his family in Murphysboro. Terry was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Terry never met a stranger and was loved by everyone whose life he touched. For many years he and his wife Sue volunteered as Santa and Mrs. Claus for many local charities. He was active in the Elks Lodge assisting with bingo and other various fundraisers. He was also an active member of the Carbon Lake Club and The Moose Lodge where he enjoyed visiting with friends. He was an avid fisherman and spent many days chasing catfish on the Big Muddy River with his dog Lucy. In his spare time, Terry could be found helping friends and family with various projects from welding to construction. He spent countless hours passing down his knowledge to others. He started his working career at the Southern Illinoisan as a linotype mechanic. He spent 19 years working in the coal mines of Southern Illinois and was a proud member of the UMWA. When his mine closed he drove a semi for Gilster Mary Lee. In the latter part of his career worked for the Township of Murphysboro Road District where he retired in 2011. Terry is survived by his loving wife Sue, daughter Angela and husband Chris Guetersloh of Murphysboro, daughter Teresa and husband Scott Cutler of Murphysboro, grandchildren Alee and husband Kyle Royster, Joe Guetersloh, John Guetersloh, Julie Cutler and Natalie Cutler, great-grandchildren Roxie and Clarence Royster all of Murphysboro, brother Tim and wife Donna Givens of Golconda, IL., and brother-in- law; Terry Smith of Dunfermline, IL. He was preceded in his passing by his parents, his sister; Connie Smith, and an infant sister; Gail Givens Services will be at 11am on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, burial will follow at Murdale Gardens of Memory near Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5 to 8pm on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro. Memorials are encouraged and may be made to the Elks Children’s Care Corporation
