Van H. Anderson

Van H. Anderson, 74, of Murphysboro passed away at 12:03 PM on Thursday, February 20, 2020 in Carbondale. Van was born March 23, 1945 in Chicago, IL, a son to the late Stanley A. “Bud” and Bernice A. (Nelson) Anderson. Van was united in marriage to Linda Sue Zoller in Florissant, MO., on February 12, 1972, Linda survives in Murphysboro. Van and Linda had attended the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Murphysboro. He was a 1963 graduate of Amundson High School in Chicago, IL. Van was a U.S. Army veteran. He was inducted into the service on September 16, 1964. He conducted his Basic Training at Ft. Knox, KY after which Van became a Military Policeman and completed his Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Gordon, GA. Van enjoyed talking about his days in the 67th Military Police Company in Paris, France, and how he guarded important generals, worked with the French Gendarmerie, and guarded the command center for Allied Forces in Europe. He separated from the service on September 15, 1966. Van attended Southern Illinois University on the GI Bill and graduated with a Bachelor of Science. He owned and operated Gusto’s Graphics in Carbondale for over forty years where he was a proud businessman and worked very hard to provide for his family. Gusto’s gave him the opportunity to let his creativity shine and get to know many people in the local community. In his later years, he was employed by the Southern Illinois Center for Independent Living where he enjoyed helping others. He was a member of the Carbondale Elks Lodge #1243 and the Southern Illinois University Veterans’ Club. Van was a proud husband and father. He was devoted to his family, was a loving Grandpa and loyal friend. He always made things fun for his nephews and nieces. He was proud of his home and enjoyed spending many hours working outside for the beautification of his property. One of his highlights was traveling to Sweden when stationed in Europe to visit family. Van also recalled fondly his trips to Acapulco with his brothers. Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro; Rev. Melissa Waterman of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Murphysboro will officiate, burial with Military Rites by American Legion Paul Stout Post 127 in Murphysboro will follow at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park near Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to the hour of services on Tuesday at Crawshaw Funeral Home. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be made to the S.I.H. Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, The Wounded Warrior Project, or to the donor’s choice. Survivors include his wife Linda Sue Anderson of Murphysboro, 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Garrett and Sarah Anderson of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Derek and Jennifer Anderson, and Brock Anderson all of Murphysboro, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Janet Anderson of Des Plaines, IL, and Bob and Ginger Anderson of Chicago, IL, 5 grandchildren, Abigail, Hannah and Caleb Anderson and Natalie and Allison Followell, 4 nieces, Denise Travers, Alyce Anderson, Debbie Kennedy, and Dawn Anderson, and 2 nephews, Brad and Jeff Chilton.
