Alma Dodd West

Alma T. Dodd West, 95, of Dongola, died at 2:45pm Friday, October 3, 2014 at home. She was born on May 20, 1919 in Aspinwall, PA, to John and Mary (Shannon) Tuckey. She married Langan J. “Speck” Dodd on February 6, 1947. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1979. Alma volunteered for military service during WWII. She was very proud of her service in the Women’s Army Corp. Alma was a business owner in Dongola for many years. She ran Dodd’s Clothing Store with her husband and later owned Dodd’s Dollar Store. Afterward, she worked for several years for the First State Bank of Dongola and served on their board of directors from 1979 to the present. Also, she worked for H & R Block as a tax accountant and up until recent years ran her own tax preparation business. Almas devoted many hours of service to the church. She served several positions in the Women of the Illinois Synod of the Lutheran Church in America over the years. From 1984-1992 she served on the Augustana College Board of Directors. Alma was always involved with the community throughout her entire life. Through the years, she was essential in providing Brownie Scouts and a girls’ softball team as well as countless other hours of support to the people around her. In her later years, Alma was very involved in the Read A Story Prison Program and was a founding member of the Dongola Public Library. She served on the library board of directors for many years. Alma was extremely devoted to family and friends and will be missed more than words can express. Alma is survived by her 2 daughters, Mary J. (Brad) Young of O’Fallon, MO and A. Ruth Dodd of Dongola; 1 son, Paul T. (Ellen) Dodd of Milwaukee, WI; step-daughter, Lola (Kerry) Jones of DeSoto, IL; step-son, Bill West of DeSoto, IL; 6 grandchildren, Jay (Siliva) Young, Brad Young (Tara Ghisilberti), Sadie (Ryan) Spiering, Thomas L. (Lisa) Dodd, Paul Young (Brooke Smith) and Eden L. Dodd and 4 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, Elena Young, Matteo Young and Logan Spiering. She was preceded in death by her parents, loving husbands, Langan Dodd and Bill West; 3 brothers, Jim, John and Roy Tuckey; sister, Esther Hageter. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 8:00pm Monday, October 6, 2014 at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola. Funeral services will be at 11:00am Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at the funeral home with Pastor Dennis Scoville officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Pisgah. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dongola Public Library and Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
