George Eugene "Sonny" Frost

IN MEMORY OF: George Eugene "Sonny" Frost Serving Location: CRAIN PLEASANT GROVE-MURDALE FUNERAL HOME 31 Memorial Drive, Murphysboro, Illinois George Eugene "Sonny" Frost, 91, of Murphysboro, Illinois, passed away on July 11, 2026, at SIH Herrin Hospital, surrounded by his children. George was born on February 22, 1935, in Pomona, Illinois, to William Henry Frost and Maggie Alice Provence. He was the youngest son of fourteen children, all of whom preceded him in death. Growing up in a large family helped shape the hardworking, humble, and dependable man so many came to know and respect. George was blessed with four children from his marriage to Delores Hale. In 1983, he married Shirley Ann Stewart. They enjoyed many years of bowling and traveling with family and friends, visiting all 50 states and Canada. He was preceded in death by Shirley and by his son, Steve Frost. He is survived by his children, Shelly Howe of Murphysboro, Deb (Jon) Carter of Washington, Illinois, Randy (Lisa) Frost of Washington, Illinois, and bonus daughter, Marla (Don) Turbett of Morton, Illinois; his grandchildren, Holly, Heath, Blake, Brandon, Breann, Nick, Quentin, Chauntel, Craig, and Mason; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. George had the privilege of participating in the Southern Illinois Honor Flight. The experience gave him a deeper appreciation for his own military service in the United States Army and became one of the most meaningful moments of his life, paying tribute not only to his own service but also to the memory and sacrifice of his two brothers, who were killed in battle during World War II. After retiring from GTE, George quickly discovered that retirement never really suited him. Even in his nineties, he simply wasn't built to sit still. The family eagerly looked forward to Santa's visit on Christmas Eve. He cherished hosting the annual extended-family Thanksgiving, spending the day smoking ribs before ending the evening by doing what he loved most—singing karaoke. And, of course, no gathering was complete without his famous homemade ice cream. In the days following his passing, story after story included memories of that ice cream. It wasn't just dessert—it was one of the many simple ways George showed the people he loved just how much he cared. He had a knack for building just about anything—from picnic tables and porch gliders to the beautiful gazebo and bridge overlooking his meticulously kept backyard. His son, Steve, inherited that same love of woodworking. George was a proud Life Member of Murphysboro Moose Lodge 1591, where he faithfully served for more than 25 years as Administrator. He earned the Pilgrim Degree, the highest honor in the Loyal Order of Moose. His craftsmanship is reflected in the lodge's handcrafted bar, complete with its distinctive penny countertop—a lasting testament to his talent, generosity, and pride in his work. George was a die-hard Cardinals fan. He often joked that if the Cubs ever won the World Series, he'd paint their logo beside his Cardinals emblem on his retaining wall. When they finally won in 2016, he kept his promise—a story his family still enjoys telling. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Crain Pleasant Grove - Murdale Funeral Home, 31 Memorial Drive, Murphysboro, IL 62966. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Rick McNeely and Ray Highfield officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Murdale Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mooseheart, a charity that held a special place in George's heart. Envelopes will be available the day of the service. Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
