Harold Vincent Shields

IN MEMORY OF: Harold Vincent Shields Serving Location: CRAIN FUNERAL HOME – MURPHYSBORO 1421 Walnut Street, Murphysboro, Illinois Harold Vincent Shields, age 84, of Gorham, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at 9:34 a.m. in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Harold was born on March 12, 1938 to William Vincent and Mabel Marie (Gale) Shields. He married Shirley Brunkhorst on June 7, 1958 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Raddle and she survives him. Harold was a graduate of Gorham High School where he played basketball and baseball. He worked for the Egyptian Electric Coop for many years, retiring in 2000. He loved hunting, fishing and especially duck hunting with his family members. He also loved playing in the weekly poker game with his close friends and cousin. Harold was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church of Murphysboro, Knights of Columbus #988, and the Sons of the American Legion. He enjoyed boating at Kinkaid Lake and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, but he especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Shields of Gorham; two sons, Kevin (Lisa) Shields of Gorham and Steven (Tammy) Shields of Gorham; one daughter, Susan Adams of Murphysboro; his grandchildren, Emilie (Brandon) Rogowski of Mt. Carmel, Caroline (Dylan) Lyell of Collinsville, Ashley Shields of Murphysboro, Kelly (Nathan) Arnold of Jacksonville, Florida, Rebecca Shields of Rochester, Illinois, Vincent Shields of Gorham, Kaden Shields of Gorham, Jeremy (Rosenda) Adams of Carterville and Jared Adams of Carterville; eleven great-grandchildren; his siblings, Barbara Alstat, Mary (Aaron) Schuster, Ervin (Gerri) Shields, Wayne (La Wanda) Shields, Connie (Leonard) Froemling and Joseph Shields; a sister-in-law, Lillian Crain; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Margaret Shields, Vera (Erwin) Mueller, Teresa (Kent) Lee and James (Barbara) Shields; two brothers-in-law, Robert “Snook” Crain and Wayne Alstat; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Shields. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro on Monday, October 24, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Robert Flannery officiating. Burial will follow at St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Church on Monday, October 24, 2022 from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to St. Andrew Catholic Church or School. Envelopes will be available and accepted at the church or the funeral home. Crain Funeral Home in Murphysboro has been entrusted with the arrangements.
