Harriet L. Haake

Harriet L. Haake, 70, of Murphysboro, passed away at 1 a.m. Monday, February 22, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, Illinois Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 25, 2010, at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Theodore Mayes officiating and burial at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at Hoyleton, IL. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pettett Funeral Home and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murphysboro, or the American Cancer Society. Harriet was born on December 31, 1939, in Centralia, Illinois, to Hugo and Vera(Seiving) Schumacher. She married Allen A. Haake on July 19, 1964, in Hoyleton, Illinois. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last summer. Mrs. Haake was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murphysboro, where she served as church organist for many years, choir member, and LWML member including terms as a district officer for the organization. She received an Associates Degree from St. John's College in Winfield, Kansas in Elementary Education and taught kindergarten in Lutheran schools for many years. She also received a Bachelors Degree from SIU-C in Early Childhood Education in 1986, becoming one of SIU's first "non-tradtional" students by going back to school in her 30's and 40's. Mrs. Haake worked at SIU in the International Student Office followed by nearly eighteen years at School of Law, where she worked as an administrative assistant to every Dean of the School of Law from its founding until she retired in 1998. She enjoyed traveling, visiting five of the seven continents over the course of many trips. She and Allen recently completed a month-long trip to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. They also participated in an annual house boating vacation with friends whose adventures where once featured in Houseboating Magazine. She is survived by her husband Allen of Murphysboro; daughter Susan Haake of Springfield, IL; son Michael Haake and daughter in law Monica Haake and their children Alex and Benjamin Haake all of Carterville, IL; a sister Eleanor Klein of Jefferson City, MO; sisters and brothers in law: Ralph and Arleen Michael of Hoyleton, IL, Richard and Audrey Finke of Nashville, IL and Pat and Anita Lampe of Centralia, IL; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, her mother and father in law Arthur and Alma Haake, and brother in law Harold Klein.
