John "Cedar Leg" Herring

John Herring, of Murphysboro, went home to be with the Lord Jesus at 9:10 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2007, at his earthly home surrounded by his loving family. John was born on June 6, 1914, in Jackson County, Illinois, to John Herring, Sr., and Carrie (Imhoff) Herring. He married Mary Ellen McRaven on February 2, 1935, in Jonesboro, IL, and she preceded him in death on November 25, 1981. Together they had eight children Elbina Barnett, who passed away November 21, 2004, and her husband Dean Barnett of Murphysboro, Alberta Reiman and her husband Donald Reiman of Murphysboro, Anthony Ronald Herring and his wife Grace Herring of Carbondale, Benjamin Joe Herring, who passed away on November 14, 1990, and his wife Carol Herring of Murphysboro, Ruth Anna Vestal and her husband Thomas Vestal, Faye Ellen Lee and David Lee, Ina Jeanette Herring, and Kimberley June McRoberts, all of Murphysboro; twenty three grandchildren, thirty nine great grandchildren, and ten great great grandchildren. He married Lora Ray William on May 21, 1998, in Murphysboro, and she survives. Mr. Herring was preceded in death by three brothers Sod Herring, Freeman Herring, and Joe Herring and two sisters Claire McClure and Maude Pierson. He is survived by two sister in laws Marge Herring of Murphysboro and Janell Rodgers and her husband Robert Rodgers of Benton; one brother in law Lewie Williams of Vergennes, IL, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Herring's family owned and operated the Herring Cedar Lane Dairy in Murphysboro. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, and worked out of Local # 318. During this time, he acquired his Riverboat Pilot License. He worked for Triangle Construction Company and worked for E. T. Simmons Construction Company. He was a heavy equipment operator and a mechanic. He was a member of Local # 318 since November of 1947, and this year became a sixty year member. He was also a member of the Murphysboro Elk's Lodge. Mr. Herring over came a disability from the loss of one leg since he was eight years old, but he never let his disability stop him from working and taking care of his family. He was a long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murphysboro, and later a member of Abundant Life Fellowship in Murphysboro. His family would like to give special thanks to Hospice and especially Ann Rose, and also to give special thanks to Dr. Michael Treece.
