Lucille "Sal" Nancy Miles

Lucille Nancy "Sal" Miles, eldest of four children, was born at home to Henry and Agnes (Shakle) Reeder, and was a lifetime resident of Desoto, Illinois. She went to her eternal resting place at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2015, at her daughter's home in Carbondale, Illinois. Lucille was born on June 18, 1927, in DeSoto, Illinois. She was a young war-bride, marrying Archie W. "Bill" Miles on April 11, 1942, in Charleston, Missouri. Bill preceded her in death on September 2, 2012. After traveling the country with her military husband, they settled in DeSoto, and were blessed with two children, a son George Leroy (Cheryl Payne) Miles, of DeSoto and a daughter Linda J. (Jerry W.) Goforth of Carbondale, and a son in law Cleveland F. "Pete" Grammer, who preceded her in death. Also surviving are three grandchildren William Edward (Cynthia) Grammer of Saucier, MS, Stephanie Lynn (Michael) Crews of DeSoto, and Julie Ann (Michael) Gaffney, of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; three great grandchildren Kimberly Lynn Grammer of Saucier, MS, Bailey Lane Gaffney and Maximus T. Gaffney of Santa Rosa Beach, FL. Lucille was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, wife, aunt, care giver and friend, who will be remember by all as a loving and giving person. She was particularly proud of being a Grandmother and often doted on her grandchildren. Other survivors include one brother and sister in law Carrol (Lou) Reeder of Gastonia, NC, and two brother in laws and three sister in laws Joseph L (Joanne) Miles, Benny R. (Nancy) Miles, and Betty R. Miles, all of DeSoto. She has numerous nieces and nephews in the area and was especially fond of Gayla Raye Pottoroff of Cambria, George L. Miles and Spring Miles of DeSoto, and Roseann Vaughn of Elkville. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Odell Reeder and one sister Albert Vaughn. Lucille served her community in many ways: as a member and past president of the former Jackson County Nursing Home Auxiliary; as a member of the American Red Cross; as a friend of the Goodbread Cemetery and many other associations. While she lived in DeSoto, she rarely missed a board meeting and always had something to say! She accompanied Bill on many wild game trips and shot her own antelope in 1969. She enjoyed fishing and just about anything that would allow her to be out of doors. She refused to use her clothes dryer, unless it was freezing, because she wanted to be outdoors. Due to ill health, in 2012, Lucille moved into a residential facility in Carbondale. Her activities were somewhat limited but that didn't stop her from asking for the facility to install a clothesline outside. She planted a garden there and grew tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. Mrs. Miles was a member of the DeSoto First Baptist Church and the Joy Class. She was active in her church and continued to attend services whenever she could. She never missed a Christmas party. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 20, 2015, at Pettett Funeral Home, Murphysboro, and burial will be at Walker Hill Cemetery in Grand Tower. Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm Thursday and until 10:30 a.m Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the St. Francis Care Animal Rescue, Murphysboro, or the DeSoto First Baptist Church.
