IN MEMORY OF: Stephen James Schlick Serving Location: CRAIN FUNERAL HOME – CAPE GIRARDEAU 829 North West End Boulevard, Cape Girardeau, Missouri Stephen James Schlick passed away on August 9, 2026, at his home surrounded by family. Born October 12, 1954, Stephen grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He lived his life around the things that mattered most to him, including his family, hard work, sports, boating, fishing, and enjoying the simple things in life. More than anything, Stephen loved his family. He and Linda L. Schlick shared many good years together and raised their three children, Andrew T. Schlick, Bobbi Jo Heon, and Ryan J. Schlick. He was always incredibly proud of his children, especially when he had the chance to watch them play sports. That pride only grew with his grandchildren, Jaxon and Presley Jo Heon. Nothing brought out his smile, quite like being around his kids and grandkids. Stephen worked hard his entire life to provide for his family. He spent more than 45 years in the automotive industry and achieved one of his proudest accomplishments when he opened his own dealership in 2002, which he proudly owned and operated until 2025. Stephen worked hard, but he played hard too. He was a simple man who was happiest on the water with his family and a cold drink in his hand. You could often find him with his hat turned backwards, sitting in the driver's seat of his boat and whipping his kids, nieces, and nephews around behind him on a tube. He loved to fish and was a member of the Mossbacks Bassmasters Cape Girardeau Chapter. In his younger years, Stephen also played baseball, including competing in the American Legion Baseball League. In 1973, he was a key part of his team’s state championship season as their catcher, a memory his family still takes pride in today. He remained a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan throughout his life, and there was almost always some kind of sporting event playing on his TV. Some of his family's fondest memories are simple ones. When his children were young, Stephen spent time in the backyard teaching them how to fish. He was always just as excited as they were when they reeled one in, especially when it was one of the big catfish that came along every now and then. He also loved hosting cookouts and could usually be found in front of the grill with a cold drink, watching his family and friends enjoy the backyard that he was so proud of. Stephen will be remembered for his incredible work ethic, his silly demeanor and funny stories, his love of fishing and Cardinals baseball, and for living life the way he wanted. Most of all, he will be remembered for how proud he was of his family and how happy he was when they were all together. Stephen is survived by his children, Andrew T. Schlick, Bobbi Jo (Taylor) Heon, and Ryan J. (Haley) Schlick, and his grandchildren, Jaxon and Presley Jo Heon. He is also survived by his former wife, Linda L. Schlick, his companion, Terri Prost, his sisters, Susan (David) Wallis and Nancy (Brian) Gibson, and his brother, Eugene (Deborah) Schlick Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene T. and Patsy J. Schlick, his sisters, Mary Jo Schlick and Barbara Schlick, and his brother, Michael L. Schlick Sr. His family will remember him in the moments he loved most, with his hat turned backwards on the boat, fishing, watching a ball game, standing at the grill, telling one of his funny stories, or simply sitting back with a cold drink and enjoying having his family around him. A Family Led Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026 from 4:30 PM until 7:30 PM at the VFW Post 3838, 1049 N Kingshighway St, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701. The family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and/or the Jackson High School soccer program. Crain Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Cape Girardeau is in charge of arrangements.
