Carl August Rothe

Carl August Rothe, 85, of Murphysboro, Illinois, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Carbondale Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, Illinois Services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murphysboro, Illinois, with Pastor Josemon Hoem officiating. Burial will be in Murdale Garden of Memory, in Murphysboro, with Military Rites by American Legion Paul Stout Post 127 of Murphysboro. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday, January 4, 2015, at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, and from 9am to 11am at the church on Tuesday. Memorials are encouraged and may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church – Elevator Fund, Immanuel Lutheran School, or to the donor’s choice. Carl A. Rothe was born October 5, 1930 in Rural Laclede Township, Fayette County, Illinois, to Fred H. and Ida Wachholz Rothe. Carl attended elementary and middle school at the Lutheran School in St. Peter, Illinois. He graduated from LaGrove High School in St. Peter, Illinois. After graduating high school he worked for Rothe Chevrolet in St. Peter, Illinois. He also attended four years of electrical apprentice schooling. Carl was inducted into the U. S. Army on November 9, 1951. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He was stationed at Ft. Lee, Virginia and he served in Sampigny, France. He supported the chemical division. Carl was united in marriage to Ina Purcell on August 18, 1957 at the Four Mile Prairie Christian church in Brownstown, Illinois. They lived in Vandalia, Illinois, where he worked for McDonald Electric as an electrician. In 1965 they moved to Murphysboro, Illinois, where he went to work as an electrician at the Physical Plant at SIU-C. He retired from the University in 1994 after 29 years of service. Carl was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Local 702 IBEW, American Legion Post 127 Murphysboro, IL, Jackson Co. Farm Bureau and SIU Alumni Association. Carl was a loving and gracious husband and father. He enjoyed fishing and being outdoors, spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren attending their many school and sports activities. He was a St. Louis Cardinal and an SIU Saluki fan. He is survived by his wife Ina and their children, son Michael W. Rothe and wife Cathy Jo, daughter Carla S. Quigley and husband Bill, all of Murphysboro, and daughter Cathryn R. Stovall and husband Robert of Dunwoody, GA. Six grandchildren, Amanda Rothe Welch and husband Roger of Falls Church VA, Justin Rothe of Murphysboro, Nicholas and Kyle Quigley of Murphysboro, and Kayla and Jarod Stovall of Dunwoody, GA. One great-grandchild, Josie Welch. One half-sister Doris Courson of St. Peter, IL, sister-in-law Sue Rothe of Hammond, IL, and sister-in-law Sue Wicke of Vandalia, IL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Fred H. and Ida Rothe, step-mother Leta Rothe, step-brother; Wayne Wicke, half-brother; Leo Rothe, and half-sister; Betty Rothe, brother-in-law; Richard Courson, nephew; Todd Wicke and niece; Jill Wicke.
