Dorothy Mae Attig

Dorothy Mae Attig, 86 of Murphysboro, died at 1:35 pm Wednesday, December 19, 2007 in Murphysboro. Dorothy was born in Murphysboro, IL., September 6, 1921 a daughter to the late Charles T. & Donna B. (Brown) Reiman. She married Lyle B. Attig in Murphysboro, IL., June 15, 1941 Lyle preceded her in death April 4, 2002. Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro. She received a Diana Award on May 8, 2000. There were many volunteer civic activities that kept her busy in the Murphysboro community. She served as the White Cross chairperson through the American Baptist Women's Organization. She organized and began the Murphysboro Food Bank where she volunteered for several years. After the tragic loss of a great grandson, she had distributed educational materials on the 'Shaken Baby Syndrome'. She was a member of the Jackson County Home Extension Agency since 1975. She also helped organize the first African American Home Extension unit in Jackson County. Dorothy was also a member of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine where she was Worthy High Priestess. She volunteered at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital and at the Jackson County Rehab and Care Center as an Auxiliary member. She was also a Red Cross Blood Mobile volunteer. She was a member of the Murphysboro Lions Club. She was a volunteer at the Murphysboro Senior Citizens Center. She served with the Jackson County Republican Women's group as an election judge. While raising her sons, she was a Boy Scout Den Mother for 9 years, and a 4-H leader. Dorothy volunteered at the Illinois Youth Center Boot Camp in Murphysboro. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Sunday, December 23, 2007 at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, Rev. Shaker Samuel of the First Baptist Church will officiate, burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park near Murphysboro. Visitation will be Sunday from 10 am until the hour of services at Crawshaw Funeral Home. Memorials are encouraged and may be made to Gideons International, Lions Club, First Baptist Church, Shriners Hospitals for Children or the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home. Survivors include, two sons and daughter in laws; Charles "Bud" and Ruth Attig of Murphysboro and Rick and Stephanie Attig of Lenexa, KS., three grandsons; Chuck, Tim, and Garrett Attig, one granddaughter and her husband; Marci & Aaron Flory and one step-grand daughter; Stacy Shields, one sister; Florence Selinger of Mechanicsburg, IL., great grandchildren; Ben & Jacob Attig, Alexis, Ashlynn and Audrey Flory and Abbey Shields, and numerous Nieces and nephews & their families. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one son; Leland Attig, one great grandson; Christopher Attig, two sisters and brother in laws; Charlene and Don Castleberry, Betty and Clark Kirkpatrick and an Aunt; Jessie Graeff.
