Elsie Irene Phillips

Elsie Irene Phillips, age 93, of Murphysboro, passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at 3:38 a.m. at Manor Court in Carbondale. Elsie was born on February 27, 1928 in Goreville, a daughter of William and Frances Bell (Jones) Stokes. In September of 1962 she married James Edward Phillips and he preceded her in death on November 22, 1995. Elsie worked as a nurse, first for Elgin State Hospital and later in the private healthcare field. She loved gardening and working in her yard when the weather permitted. Elsie loved yardsaling and taking road trips with her daughter, Kelly. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include two daughters, Kelly M. Phillips of Murphysboro and Sharon (Ben) Rose of Murphysboro; one son, David E. Armbrust of Sugar Grove, Illinois; four grandchildren, Marc A. Phillips Perez, Brandie J. Phillips Perez, Phil (Ann) Rose and Mike (Kelly) Rose all of Murphysboro; four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Patty Stokes and Betty Johnson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James E. Phillips; three brothers; one sister; one sister-in-law; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Armbrust; and a great-granddaughter, Tanya Henderson. A private entombment will be held in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park Mausoleum. No public services will be held at this time. Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.
