IN MEMORY OF: Gary Phillips Serving Location: CRAIN FUNERAL HOME – ANNA 135 West Vienna Street, Anna, Illinois Gary Phillips, age 67 of Anna, passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at 6:01 P.M. at his residence. Born on November 20, 1955 in Effingham, Illinois, he was the son of Douglas Lee and Janelle (Nichols) Phillips. He married his love, Brenda Sue Brown on September 20, 1986 and spent many loving years together until her passing in 2015. Gary was quite the entrepreneur and owned several businesses over the years. His greatest business was that of being the manager of A-J Cable TV from its early inception in the late 1970’s until its sale in 1989. These years were great with unlimited potential as everyone was adding this service as part of their family entertainment and informational resources as more channels were coming along and developing. Later, he owned Phillips Village Apartments in Carbondale. Then in 2004, Gary opened Phillips Car Wash in Anna, which continues today. He was a diehard Cardinals fan. Gary was a member of the local Kiwanis Club for many years and attended the First Christian Church, where he was a member. Gary was also a Boy Scout leader when DJ was involved. Gary enjoyed woodworking until his Parkinson’s prevented this activity. Gary is survived by his son, DJ Phillips (Matt Nobles); daughter, Jessica Phillips; mother, Jan Phillips; sister, Candy (Gregg) Walters; nieces, Blake (Isaac) Bennett, Samantha (Alex) Smallberger, and Alexa (Ben) Leech; and caregiver, Judy Pind, as well as other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife and father. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and Thursday, August 17, 2023 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Crain Funeral Home in Anna. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at11:00 AM at Crain Funeral Home in Anna with Bryan McAlister and Gregg Walters officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service at 3:00 PM at Elmwood Cemetery in Flora, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Crain Funeral Home, Anna, Illinois is in charge of funeral arrangements.
