Leslie “Jupe” Henry Mainer, age 96 of Carbondale and formerly of Grand Tower and McClure, passed away, Tuesday, February 2, 2021 in Manor Court. He was born November 6, 1924 in Catron, MO to Leslie Elden and Cora Mae “Flossie” (Willie) Mainer. Les proudly served his country in the Army during WWII, transporting wounded soldiers back home from the South Pacific. On September 26, 1966 he married Madeline (Freeman) Burke in the Methodist Church, Grand Tower. Les and Madge had one son, Kingsley Elden Mainer. He had many skills and mainly his careers were as a riverboat chief engineer; auto body man and a barber. He enjoyed gardening; mechanical work and was an extraordinary handyman. He was a member of the Elm Street Baptist Church and enjoyed working in the food pantry ministry. Les is survived by his wife, Madeline Mainer; a son, Kingsley (Jill) Mainer; stepsons; Michael (Susan) Burke; William (Tonia) Burke; John (Jeannie) Burke and Broderick (Pam) Burke; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Jerry (Earla) Mainer; a sister, Carmen (AD) Hoffman; other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Delbert “Pete” (Marie) Mainer; Maxine (Bill) Halter and Kathryn (William “Slug”) Taylor. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, February 5, 2021 in Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home, 31 Memorial Dr., Murphysboro with Rev. Charles Allen officiating. Interment will follow in Walker Hill Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the hour of service. Memorials can be made to the Elm Street Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
