Verna Lee Nobel

IN MEMORY OF: Verna Lee Nobel Serving Location: CRAIN FUNERAL HOME – MURPHYSBORO 1421 Walnut Street, Murphysboro, Illinois Verna Lee Nobel, age 95, departed this world and passed over to her eternal glory on January 10, 2023. She was born on December 3, 1927, in rural Jackson County, Illinois (Levan Township). She was the proud daughter of Silas E. and Malindia Anna Shannon (nee Crisler), who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Wilma Shannon, Claudine Shannon and Kathryn Smith; and three brothers, Kenneth Shannon, Henry Shannon and Ernest Shannon. She married Paul R. Nobel of Murphysboro on September 24, 1949 and he preceded her in death on December 24, 2000. Her surviving family members include her brother, Claude Shannon and his wife, Fern Shannon of Murphysboro, Illinois; a daughter, Janet F. Caraway of Red Bud, Illinois; a son, Dale R. Nobel and his wife, Rebecca Nobel of Toulon, Illinois. Further surviving family members include her grandson, Jason Caraway and his wife, Autumn Caraway of Shiloh, Ilinois; her granddaughter, Monica Kirkpatick and her husband, Ryan Kirkpatrick of Waterloo, Illinois; her granddaughter, Shannon Brattebo and her husband, Ben Brattebo of Spokane, Washington; her granddaughter, Christy VanMeter and her husband, Dustin VanMeter of Lewistown, Missouri.; her granddaughter, Katie Baskin and her husband, Stephen Baskin of Murphysboro, Illinois; and her granddaughter, Kimberly Nobel of St. Louis, Missouri. Her legacy of kindness and love continues on to her ten great-grandchildren, Hannah Caraway, Liam Caraway, Rylee Kirkpatrick, Ava Brattebo, Trey Baskin, Kaylee Baskin, Cheyenne VanMeter, Will VanMeter, Wyatt VanMeter and Savannah Jackson. In her incredible life she was very active doing the Lord’s work through the First Baptist Church of Murphysboro, Illinois. There, she was a member of the Loyal Builders Sunday School Class, in addition to being the American Baptist Women’s Ministries President from 1976 through 1978. Thereafter, she was a member of the Deacon Care Team, as its President. She often volunteered to be a door greeter to usher in her family and friends to her beloved house of worship. She first worked as a secretary for The Wholesale Grocery Company in Murphysboro after graduating from Murphysboro High School. She also attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. She was most known, however, for her Avon work in the community. She won numerous sales awards, but to her, the best reward for her work was engaging with all of the wonderful people she was able to come into contact with. Most of all, however, she will be remembered for living her life as a shining example of our Lord’s compassion, mercy and grace to all peoples, regardless of their station in life or circumstance. She was unwavering in her faith and tireless in her efforts to show the love of Christ to everyone she met. Funeral Services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Murphysboro on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with her beloved pastor and friend, Shaker Samuel officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park in Murphysboro, Illinois. A time of visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Crain Funeral Home in Murphysboro has been entrusted with the arrangements. Donations on her behalf can be made to the American Cancer Society in loving memory of the amazing love she shared with her husband, Paul R. Nobel. They rest once again together in glory with their Lord and Savior, in perfect peace and tranquility. Envelopes will be available and accepted at the church or the funeral home.
