Vincent DuWayne "Wayne" Attig Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Vincent DuWayne (Wayne) Attig, 92, died on Monday, January 11, 2021 at home in Murphysboro, Illinois. He was born on May 4, 1928 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin to the Reverend Fred G. and Velva (Bishop) Attig. He moved with his family to Murphysboro at the age of 9, when his father received a missionary assignment to Southern Illinois. On June 6, 1948, Wayne was united in marriage to Wylanna Jones in Murphysboro. After they wed, they set off on their honeymoon in a borrowed car. The adventure they started that day lasted 72 years and brought them a deep, abiding, and unconditional love. Wylanna survives him. Their union was blessed with two children, Dale (Cindy) Attig of Phoenix, Arizona, and Carla (Randy) Wood of Murphysboro, who are left to mourn his loss. Wayne’s true joy was his family, and his son and daughter meant the world to him. Until the day of his passing, he kept their childhood portraits on his desk where he would be sure to see them every day. His daughter was with him as he took his last breath, providing him the assurance as he left this world that he was loved far beyond measure. Wayne is also survived by his grandchildren, Terry (Hetti Brown) Lilley of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Ami (Van) Lilley-Plexico of Smithton, Illinois, Stacie Attig of Phoenix, Arizona, and Zach (Alexis) Waters of Phoenix, Arizona. No grandchild was ever blessed by a kinder, more loving grandfather. Wayne’s love grew exponentially with each generation, and he doted on his three great-grandchildren, Madeleine Lilley and Mira Plexico of Smithton, Illinois, and Wynter Waters of Phoenix, Arizona, all of whom survive. Wayne served his country during World War II as a member of the National Guard. He was employed as a press operator at Lustour, and retired after many years of dedicated service. A man of unshakable faith, he was a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene in Murphysboro. He was a simple man who did not need much, but who gave so freely of himself to those around him. Quick with a smile and a joke, and quicker still with a helping hand to anyone who needed one, Wayne has left behind a beautiful legacy to comfort those who mourn him. In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Wayne is survived by his beloved nieces and nephews, his church family, dear neighbors, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Berea Tribbey and Charlotte Lundy, four brothers, Maurice, Lyle, Walter, and Austin Attig, and a granddaughter, Kelli Jo Attig. Services will be at 11:30am on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at the mausoleum located at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park near Murphysboro; Rev. Jim Frye will officiate. The family gratefully requests that memorial contributions be made to the Church of the Nazarene in Murphysboro.
