Wylanna Harriet Attig

Wylanna Harriet (Jones) Attig, 90, of Murphysboro, passed away on March 20, 2021, in Herrin Hospital. She was born on May 29, 1930 in Carbondale, Illinois, to James Andrew and Kate Adeline (Phemister) Jones. She grew up in Carbondale and Pomona, Illinois, on her family’s farms. Wylanna was united in marriage to Vincent DuWayne (Wayne) Attig on June 6, 1948, in Murphysboro, one week after her 18th birthday. Their marriage was long and beautiful, full of laughter, adventures, and, most of all, unconditional love. Wylanna’s beloved Wayne predeceased her in January, 2021, and we know she is overjoyed at their reunion. Wylanna was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was her heart, and she was the heart of her family. She leaves a son, Dale (Cindy) Attig of Phoenix, Arizona and daughter, Carla (Randy) Wood, of Murphysboro, Illinois, to mourn her passing. Wylanna was a loving “Gram” to her grandchildren, Terry (Hetti Brown) Lilley of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Ami (Van) Lilley-Plexico of Smithton, Illinois, Stacie Attig of Phoenix, Arizona, and Zach (Alexis) Waters of Phoenix, Arizona, as well as great-grandchildren Madeleine Lilley and Mira Plexico of Smithton, Illinois, and Wynter Waters of Phoenix, Arizona. No child, grandchild, or great-grandchild could ask for a better example of love and kindness than the one she provided each day of her life. Wylanna was a 1947 graduate of MTHS. During her high school years, she and her mother rented an apartment in Carbondale so that Wylanna could take the train to school each day while her mother worked during the week. Her mother was determined that Wylanna would finish her high school education, and sacrificed so much to see that come to pass. After her marriage, she provided decades of faithful service to her church, serving as Church Treasurer and teaching Sunday school for many years. Wylanna influenced countless children during her time as a Sunday school teacher, and this was one of her great joys. Wylanna embodied gentleness and love. If she knew you, she loved you. She gave of herself freely and willingly, and never missed an opportunity to help anyone who needed it. She lived a life of service for as long as she was able In addition to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Wylanna leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews, her church family, and dear friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a brother and sister, James D. Jones and Georgia (Jones) Brandon, and a granddaughter, Kelli Jo Attig. Services will be Tuesday, March 23rd at 10am at the Pleasant Grove Memorial Park Mausoleum, entombment to follow. The family gratefully requests that memorials be made to the First Church of the Nazarene in Murphysboro. The family wishes to thank the nursing staff of Herrin Hospital for providing such excellent and compassionate care during her final days.
