IN MEMORY OF: Michael James Borgsmiller Serving Location: CRAIN FUNERAL HOME – MURPHYSBORO 1421 Walnut Street, Murphysboro, Illinois It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Michael James Borgsmiller. Michael who we called Mikey when he was young but transpired to Mike as he matured. Mike, 67, of Murphysboro, passed away on Saturday January 6, 2024 at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, Illinois. Michael was born on Friday, July 13, 1956 to William Jennings and June Christine (Knox) Borgsmiller in Murphysboro, Illinois. Survivors include his sibling: Dr. Bill (Mary) Knox Borgsmiller of Red Bluff, California; Sandy (Hubie) Kerns of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Cherie (Karl) Korbacher of Carmel, Indiana; Judy (Dan) Bost of Murphysboro; nieces and nephew, Danny Korbacher, Bill Borgsmiller, Kristen Borgsmiller, Zach Kerns, Karynne Korbacher, Kallie Kerns, K.C. Korbacher, Danielle Bost Kamerud, Kendra Korbacher, Dr. Kent Korbacher, Craig Bost, Caleb Bost and Kristin Korbacher, 9 great nieces great-nieces and great-nephew; and numerous cousins. Mike was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Mike attended Saint Andrews Elementary School from 1966-1974, he graduated Murphysboro High School 1974. Mike graduated with honors from Southern Illinois University as a microbiologist. Mike enlisted in the Air force in 1980. The Air force, because of his excellent math background sent Mike to the Air force academy at the University of Akron; there he received a degree as an electrical engineer. Mike served 6 years in the Air force and then went to the private sector. Mike received his Masters’ degree in computer programing from Southern Illinois University. Mike started his lifetime career with Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge Tennessee. Mike received many accolades for his work. Mike had a great love of science and one of the quotes of Albert Einstein rang constant; “two things are infinite; the universe and human stupidity; and I am not sure about the universe.” Mike was in tune with the television. He would watch the science channel and talk about alternate universes, rogue planets, supernovas, Lagrangian points, etc. Mike perceived our universe as an enormous incredible place. There was much to be discovered and events within our universe to be understood. Mike would talk back to the television News. He was a conservative and could not understand our current state of affairs. He believed in America and planned to be present to cast his vote for Trump. After retirement, Mike looked forward to his daily telephone call from his cousin Dave Smith. He would keep Dave up to date on current events and news. They loved to argue and debate their viewpoints. Above all, Mike loved God and his family. He truly believed in the” Golden Rule” and he had impeccable integrity. All his cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and in-laws were all held close to his heart. He shared our lives; he held our hands, and he will forever hold our hearts. Services will be held at St. Andrew Church, Murphysboro on Jan 27, 2024. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am and funeral mass will begin at 11:00 am. Inurnment with full military honors will take place at a later date at St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery in Murphysboro. Memorials can be made to St. Andrew Church, St. Andrew School or Grace Presbyterian Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Crain Funeral Home.
